Civilians of Holhudhoo gathered near the Island Office

Some civilians of Holhudhoo gathered near the island office and urged to give them an empty land area to build a citizens pharmacy.
There problem is due to the expensive medicines being sold to them from the only pharmacy in the island owned by the island chief’s brother. Their claim is that they could sell medicines to the poor islanders in a cheaper rate. Also it would be competitive and a change in the prices will be seen due to it. Everyone would buy the cheap available medicine. Due to this they’d be forced to decrease the rates.
Sources say that they were gathered near the office till sunset. Some said that they even entered the office several times to get a reply. But the island chief said that he called to the Urban Development Board and they rejected to give a land. But later when called to them by a civilian, they said that nothing has been reported to them on the issue. Furthermore they said that it is upto the island office to take a decision.
It is reported that the atoll chief is also to come to the island to solve the problem.

Miladhoo islanders took control of office

The islanders of Noonu Miladhoo has yesterday surrounded and locked the Island office and island court. An informant from the island said that the island office was surrounded and locked yesterday morning at 7:30 after the islanders discussed the matter last Friday and unofficially informing the island chief that they would so this.

The informant said that the people had to do this as there had been no solution for the problems they are facing on inner lagoon, sewage system, electricity and water.In 2006 October when the construction began at the harbor construction, it was informed that work would be completed within 5 months, but yet it had not been completed, he said. He also said that the small area which the work was completed had also been completely destroyed by now due to the waves and the government had tried to take away the equipment they brought to do the construction work.

“The government is saying that they want to complete the work of harbor very soon. But they are taking the equipments used. How could we believe that they are taking the equipments back if they want to speed up the work” he said.

He said that it had been so long since they have been complaining for a solution for the sewage system problems they are facing. He said that they would surely face various many health problems when 6 sewage systems have to be fit for a 150 sq feet land where there are 6 water wells. He said that the government had so far refused to build the sewage system of the island on the road.

“When Environment and water Minister Ahmed Abdullah visited the island early this year, we showed him the situation of our sewage system. He said he would look in to it. But since then, there had been no news from them” the angry islander said.

The informant from the island said that they face many problems in getting fresh water also. He said that Miladhoo did not get any black water tanks although water tanks had been distributed to all islands of Maldives and the government water tanks also could not be kept in the island due to some problem faced I allocating land for them. He said that they don’t get water in the hot season.

When looked into the situation of electricity in the island, he said that electricity was recently disconnected in the island for 2 weeks and the atoll chief did not even visit them within those two weeks. He said that the islander now could not even use a computer as electricity may go out at any time for the day and also frequently. He said that the island chief had done a lot of work to solve this problem.

The informant said that the members representing them at the People’s Majlis never helped them and there are neither answering their calls nor replying to their text messages.

There was no one in the island opposing the closure of the island office and even the fishermen who go for yellow fish tuna fisheries are also waiting in the island today, the informant said. He said that people are active, serving food and drinks for the other islanders and they have even sheltered the area near the office they are staying.

“Everyone is here. We have juice packets, food and even refrigerators are here” he said.

Noonu Niladho Island chief Mohamed Hassan, at the area said that he has nothing to say more than what the informant has said and said that there were no lies in what the informant said. The island chief said that he had informed the matter to the atoll office and the atoll office has told to open the island office and go on with paper work if the people want to solve the problems they are facing. But the island chief said that the people are refusing to open the island office unless high level government officials from the relevant ministries meet the islanders.

The informant said that he called the interim atoll chief Mohamed Ali at 4pm yesterday and requested hi on behalf of all islanders to visit the island and to see the people’s participation in this.“Mohamed Ali said that he was in Maafaru, watching a football match. He said that he is working as according to the instructions by the Atolls ministry and he could not come to the island even though the people request. Then I asked whether he is there in Maafaru, watching a foot ball match after ignoring the problems at our island because the atolls ministry instructed so? He said that he has already said that he was working under the instructions from atolls ministry. I told him that I would give this information to media and he said that he had no problem with it”

FC The City organised a feast

FC The City organised a feast for winning the Adhha Eid Football Tournament 2007. They got the champion by playing against BAFA (Banians Association for All) with a lead of 2 to 1.

After obtaining this valuable and remarkable award, they celebrated this achievement very brightly. The whole island was invited to a feast held at Red Stone from 2000 hrs to 2200 hrs last night. A lot of people took part in this gatherring including players from other teams.

Such gatherings are now becoming very common in Holhudhoo. This creates a close relationship between its people.

We hope the next tournament would be better than this and more and more teams would participate.

FC The City won the Adh-ha Cup 2007

FC The City won the Adh-ha Eid Football Tournament held in Holhudhoo during the Adh-ha Eid Holidays. They succeeded the tournament this evening against BAFA (Banians Association for All) and won by 2 to 1.

First goal scored from The City was scored by Mohamed Ibrahim (Patey), a player from Hinnavaru, and the second goal was scored by Fido from Miladhoo. These two players were brought to The City for this tournament. The only goal scored to BAFA was scored by Hussain. The score was unchanged till the end of the match and with a one goal lead FC The City got the champion.

After the match award were distributed to the teams. FC The City got the prize for the champion team and BAFA obtained the prize for runner-up team. Fair play was awarded to BFC (Banians Football Club).

Eid Celebrations at Holhudhoo

This year’s Adh-ha Eid has been celebrated very colourfully in Holhudhoo. It started with the completion of the Eid Prayer in both the mosques in Holhudhoo. As usual, before starting the events, people visited their friends and family members and took some sort of snack. They greeted them with ‘EID MUBARAK‘.

First was the appearance of apparitions commonly known as ‘bey’. It took place at about 8:30 in the morning. This might not be common to all of us. But I hope most of us are familiar with it. This was done by changing the appearance to some sort of horrible image and walking round the island. Mostly they use different types of leaves, charcoal and cotton. Each of them has a unique appearance. Drummers would follow them and some youths and youngsters would follow the drummers. These ‘beys’ would chase people and scare them. Some other beys like ‘DHELIBEY‘ and ‘KAFABEY‘ were also displayed.

Nights were entertained by youths who presented different items and events on the stage built at the empty space in the new school area. Tonnes of people went to watch the stage shows. It was organised and conducted by The Women’s Development Association and Ibrahim Ali Group.

And also there was a football tournament held amongst the teams of Holhudhoo. The first match was played at 4:00 pm on Monday, 17th of this month in holhudhoo stadium located in the south-western region of the island. Totally six teams participated in the tournament from six different areas of the island. They were:

Holhudhoo Southern City (HSC)
Banian Football Club (BFC)
Banian Association For All (BAFA)
The Charlies of Champions (TCOC)
FC The City
FC Beyscity

After playing competitive matches between the participated teams, BAFA and The City went through to the finals. As this article is being updated, the play-off between the two teams are going-on. As the match comes to an end, awards would be delivered to champion and runner-up team and other awards would also be delivered.

Population award ceremony boycotted

Citizens of Holhudhoo have boycotted the ceremony held to deliver the population award given by the government in the year 2005 to the islands having a population above 2000 for controlling their populations.

The island chief Mr. Mohamed Rashid stated that the ceremony held the previous night has been cancelled as a few attended it. “The atoll chief was appointed to deliver the award. But he wasn’t satisfied with the attendies due to their minority”, he added.

Mr. Rashid said that the citizens were unsatisfied with the award hence it was too late to deliver it.

“Its an award purely owned by us. We got it from our own attempt. So, as a citizen of Holhudhoo, I would also be unsatisfied to accept an award two years later”, stated the island chief.

Apart from the atoll chief, island chiefs of other islands also took part in the ceremony. A person from the island confirmed us that around thirty people attended the ceremony.

Four strangers arrested in Holhudhoo

Four strangers from N. Miladhoo got drunk and roamed along the streets of Holhudhoo this morning. They purchased 4 bottles of cologne from ‘Ulhaa’, a shop located in the center of the island.

A 17 years old girl was in the shop and she sold the cologne to them. She comfirmed that they purchased 4 bottles of Splash Cologne “Musk”.

Eye witnesses said that they consumed it in the southern area of the island near the Waste Disposal Area. Some people from the island have seen them fallen down on the ground and also have seen vomitted to different areas of the island.

The island chief Mohamed Rashid informed the Police at N. Manadhoo and they arrived in the afternoon. The four people were arrested by the police. The girl in the shop was also taken to the police for witness.

Now the four people were in the custody of the police.

Shaykh Ilyas visited Holhudhoo

The Vice President of the Scholars Council of Adhaalath Party (AP) Shaykh Ilyas Hussain visited Holhudhoo to deliver religious speeches to the people of Holhudhoo. His trip was basically to deliver religious lectures to the people of Noonu Atoll and Shaviyani Atoll and to enlighten their fault understandings about the religion. Along with him, the Legal Advisor of AP Uz Asadhullah Shafi Ahmed and the member of the Discussion Council Mr. Hussain Ibrahim also visited the islands.

Shaykh Ilyas arrived Holhudhoo around 9:30 am on the 16th of November after giving speeches at N. Velidhoo the might before. One of the businessmen of the island, Mr. Ibrahim Varudhee/Narugismaa, organised this trip to Holhudhoo together with the IDC (Island Development Committe). He circulated invitations to the whole island to attend to listen to the speech of shaykh Ilyas.

His first speech was at Meynaa School around 9:50 am. The meeting was introduced by the island chief Mr. Mohamed Rashid. After that shaykh Ilyas briefly explained about ‘Death’; how we should prepare for it, how the death comes to believers and unbelievers, and many more interesting and important issues regarding it. A ‘Question and Answer’ session was followed by the one hour speech. The gathering was ended around 11:30 am.

Shaykh Ilyas led the Jumu’ah Prayer for the people that day. After that was his second lecture at Masjid al-Ikhlas. Being different from the previous lecture, most of the time was given for ‘Question and Answer’ session. A lot of questions were confronted by the islanders and each and every issue they took were answered according to the quran and the sunnah.

After that, he went to take lunch and departed the island at around 2:00 pm. As confirmed, his next trip is to N. Miladhoo.
